Rion Homes is very excited to be building on one of the only inhabited islands on Lake Norman. There are plans for three to four new homes and one dramatically renovated home. The waterview lots range from .34 to 1 acre and include a deeded right to a large, private waterfront access lot This quiet, historic neighborhood seems secluded and remote when in actuality the islanders are mere minutes from every convenience.
History
Norman Island was developed in the early 1960's prior to actually becoming an "island".The original lot auction sale flyer states that there was "ample time to build pier, slope beach etc. before water comes" in 1962.There are stories of the original farmers who owned the land Duke Power claimed in this area of Cornelius, having a hard time believing there would ever really be a lake. They sat outside their barns and just watched the water rise and surround their old homesteads.Norman Island Drive, the current causeway onto the neighborhood was previously Sam Furr Road, which travelled right through the present day island and on to Mr. Sam Furr's farm, which is now somewhere due west and underwater. The original 1900's farm house still stands between Norman Island Drive and Lakeshore and is owned by one of the original Norman Island neighbors.
What began as almost a resort area is still one of the most peaceful and pretty spots on the lake. There are original islanders who have been part of the community for close to 30 years along with younger families who have found the perfect spot to grow. The pleasant mix of old and newer homes in various styles adds to the unique atmosphere. It's a friendly place where friends and neighbors enjoy walking around and always stop for a chat and a smile. Come take a look and if you're like me, you will want to stay.
